The invention relates to new aryloxy phenoxy acyl malonates of the general Formula I <IMAGE> (I) <IMAGE> a process for the preparation thereof and herbicidal compositions comprising the same. The compounds of the general Formula I may be prepared by reacting a compound of the general Formula II <IMAGE> (II) with a metal derivative of a malonate of the general Formula III <IMAGE> (III) or in the presence of a metal compound with a malonate of the general Formula III; or reacting a compound of the general Formula IV <IMAGE> (IV) with a compound of the general Formula V; <IMAGE> (V) or reacting a compound of the general Formula VI <IMAGE> (VI) with a compound of the general Formula VII <IMAGE> VII (in which Formulae R1, R2, R3, X and n are as stated above; Y stands for halogen, cyano or alkylcarbonyloxy; Z represents halogen; and if Q is hydroxy or alkali metal oxy, P stands for halogen, or if Q stands for halogen P represents hydroxy or alkali metal oxy).
